Gold Rush

Become a 49er-a gold miner, that is. Tens of thousands of people came to California hoping to find gold. Some struck it rich; but many had their hopes crushed. Now it’s your turn to pan for gold, just like the miners did. What will you find? Click here to view a short video clip.


Western History Workshops
Museum of the American West
Classes run one Thursday a month, 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., from September to May. Please call for dates, times and topics.
All workshops are free

Join us for this series of stimulating scholarly seminars where you have the opportunity to review a scholar’s paper and then meet with them to discuss their ideas and work. The workshop runs throughout the fall and spring; topics and scholars rotate monthly. Papers are distributed by e-mail two weeks prior to each seminar. Museum of the American West

This tour introduces the permanent galleries at the Museum of the American West. Docents use hands-on carts and teaching replicas to explore western lands, cowboys, popular culture, changes and transformations of the West after the Civil War, and the diverse communities of people that shaped the American West in the late 19th century.

The Autry National Center is offering adults and children a whole new way to explore our galleries with audio tours. Visitors can choose the artifacts or works of art you want to learn more about and hear brief presentations, with quotes, music and sound effects to inspire a closer look. Families will find specially created scripts to help them talk about what they see, think about key moments in time and learn about the history of the American West.

Collections Online


Collections Online
Explore a new tool available to you and your students. Collections Online has more than 17,000 records—including more than 14,000 images—from the Museum of the American West’s artifact collections, and more than 40,000 records from our library databases. Images from the Southwest Museum of the American Indian are being added daily.

Explore the Learn More section to learn about some of the themes explored in our galleries. And don’t forget to click on the object name to see the full records, where you will find subject links to other records within the database.

You can customize the Collection Online by going to Log On My Favorites. Here you can save your images and gain access to them whenever you want. No need to research the database every time you log on.

New records and images are added every month, so check back for more! Go to autrynationalcenter.org/collections.
