California Style: Art and Fashion From the California Historical Society
March 30 to May 27, 2007

Seemingly overnight Gold Rush money combined with a population boom to create a market for art and fashion in California. Wealthy Californians collected paintings that captured unique landscapes, documented ways of life believed to be vanishing, and helped establish their place in society. They also dressed in the latest fashions, exquisitely manufactured clothing that attested to their taste and aspirations.

About the California Historical Society

First established in 1871, the California Historical Society collects, preserves, publishes, and exhibits materials on the history of California and the West. The collections feature works of great value and historic significance, including paintings, photographs, historic clothing, books, and archival materials.

The Autry National Center and the California Historical Society have joined in a 100-year partnership to bring the vibrant history of California to a wider audience. This exhibition highlights some of the paintings and fashions that are now available for the public to view as part of this important collection-sharing agreement.
